First, you’ll piece, sandwich, and quilt your background, creating a dynamic canvas of strips, checkerboards, and stitched texture that will highlight your tree applique. Then you’ll shift to raw-edge machine applique, layering branches, presents, and ornaments in a way that feels creative, not fussy. The result is a modern, eye-catching holiday quilt that shines from across the room and rewards a closer look.

In class, you’ll learn how to piece a strip-based background, organize fabrics for maximum impact, and quilt lazy curves and decorative lines that enhance (not compete with) the tree. Sue shows you a smarter way to tackle raw-edge machine applique so you can stitch through multiple layers with ease and keep your decorative stitches flowing smoothly around curves. You’ll experiment with gold and silver threads, ribbons, glitter glue, sequins, and beads to give your tree anything from subtle shimmer to full-on sparkle. Supplies You'll Need

Fabric and Supplies

2 yards total of assorted white and cream fabrics
At least eight (8) pieces of green fabric, each measuring 9" × 20"
(5) 10” squares of fabric for presents
(1-1/2) yards of Double Stick Light fusible web
(I find that Steam-a-Seam 2: Light works well)
(1) yard of light-weight batting
(1) yard of backing fabric
1/4 yard of dark green fabric for bindings

Additionally, you will want an assortment of:
