Located in the area of Istanbul, Eyu¨p is on the Golden Horn, and the region extends to the Black Sea. The town itself lies beyond the walls of Istanbul and is known as a burial area. The Eyu¨p Sultan Mosque is a sacred place, as it holds the remains of Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, the companion and standard-bearer of the Prophet Muhammad. As part of the Arab Army, al-Ansari was killed during the first attempt to capture Constantinople and was buried here. This table runner is based on an Iznik tile that can be found in the Eyu¨p Sultan Mosque.
