    Mary Hertel

Mary (also known as Marney) Hertel grew up on a small dairy farm in the heart of Wisconsin. Sewing is in her blood, and she likes to say she has “sewn since birth,” starting on her mother’s sewing machine at a very early age. After securing her art education job straight out of college, she used her first paycheck to purchase a sewing machine. Soon after, she started to quilt and has never stopped. Mary’s favorite quilting method became paper piecing after she was introduced to this practice in 2013. The puzzle-like quality of paper piecing appealed to Mary and has quickly become her favorite approach to adding an image to a quilt. Her quirky animal designs are a nod to 35 years of teaching children’s art. “I try to keep my animal designs childlike but expressive,” Mary says. She also strives to offer her customers straightforward paper-pieced patterns. Mary has five previously published books, scores of magazine articles, and over 200 patterns that can be found on Etsy.com and in many quilting stores throughout the United States. Enjoy her whimsical designs and her easy-to-paper-piece patterns. She lives in Oshkosh, WI. madebymarney.com
