Carl taught himself quilting in 1997 after watching television shows such as Simply Quilts, Quilt in a Day, and Love of Quilting. He began to design his own quilts in 2006 and started his design business in 2007. Carl’s strong design sense is influenced by architecture and his two years spent living abroad in Asia. Besides designing and writing books, Carl travels the country speaking and teaching at quilt guilds and shops. Born and raised on the beaches of Florida, Carl now lives in Missouri with his family of three dogs and a cat (Betty, Russel, Vivian, and Saffron). Carl has degrees in chemistry and biology from the University of Miami, a degree in linguistics from the Community College of the Air Force, and a degree in accounting and business management from the University of Central Florida.
