Bonnie K. Hunter lives with her husband, Dave, on 42 wooded acres of the Blue Ridge mountainside in southwestern Virginia, accompanied by their two dogs, Zoey and Mabel, and two cabin cats, Lola and Ivy. Together with the help of their son Jeff, they run Quiltville Inn, a beautiful and large Victorian house turned quilt retreat center that they purchased in 2018. The lovely old house has become a destination for quilters far and wide—a place where creativity and friendship thrive. Two retreat cats keep watch over the retreaters. Once feral, Tula Tallulah Lou became the porch watch kitty in 2023 and was joined by Flash in 2025. The cat distribution system is evidently working overtime in Grayson County, Virginia. Bonnie’s sons, Jason and Jeff, tease that their mom has been quilting “Since the 1900s!” (Honestly, since the 1980s, so that tracks.) Her favorites have always been scrappy quilts with a nod to the traditional while embracing new ideas that stretch her imagination. “Foraged, Found, Gathered, Gleaned, and Gifted!” is how Bonnie best describes her eclectic fabric stash, and she believes that “If it’s still ugly, you just didn’t cut it small enough!” Bonnie appreciates the slow pace of hand quilting and hand-stitched bindings, traveling English Paper Piecing projects with no deadlines, and simple embroidery, as well as the fast-paced, pedal-to-the-metal speed of machine piecing and long arm quilting. There is room for ALL quilting methods that bring us joy! Visit her website at quiltville.com.
