Welcome to Installment #2 of Kim Diehl’s Simple Whatnots IV Mystery Stitch-Along! Read below to find directions for cutting and piecing fabric.
CUTTING:

From scraps of assorted prints, cut a total of:
- 64 rectangles, 1” x 2”

From scraps of cream prints, cut a total of:
- 4 strips, 1” x 8 1/2"
- 4 squares, 3” x 3”; cut each square in half diagonally once to yield 2 triangles (combined total of 8).

Please note that for the scrappy look in the featured project, you’ll only use one triangle cut from each of
the 4 squares.

From scraps of a single complimentary print (Kim chose navy), cut:
- 2 squares, 3” x 3”; cut each square in half diagonally once to yield 2 triangles (combined total of 4)
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Referring to the Safe Keeping project beginning on page 21, “Piecing and Adding the Border”, follow step 1 (using 16 assorted-print rectangles for each unit) to sew a total of four pieced border units measuring 2 1/2" x 8 1/2", including the seam allowances. Press as directed by the arrow.
2. Follow step 2 of the same section using the four cream 1” x 8 1/2" strips to sew four pieced border units measuring 2 1/2" x 8 1/2", including the seam allowances.
3. Using the cream and complimentary print triangles cut from 3” squares, follow step 3 of the same section to piece, press, and trim four half-square-triangle units as noted in the book.
4. Join the assorted-print edge of two pieced border units from step 1 above to the right and left sides of the pieced block unit from Installment #1 as shown below. Press as directed by the arrows. Join the four half-square-triangle units to the remaining two pieced border units as shown. Press as directed.
Referring once again to the illustration below, join these two completed border units to the remaining top and bottom edges of the block unit. Press as directed. The pieced quilt top with inner border should measure 12 1/2" square, including the seam allowances.
5. Reserve this pieced Installment #2 unit and all fabric scraps for Installment #3.
