Crafting has been part of Kirsten's life since she was five years old. Her first project was a pillowcase made of a Danish cleaning cloth with very loose loops that you could pull a string of yarn through. Then, Kirsten's grandmother taught her how to knit at the age of seven. In Denmark, where she was born, she learned to sew at school, and by the age of fourteen, Kirsten sewed many of her clothes. When she moved to Brooklyn in 1977, her first sewing project was her wedding dress. She made the dress out of hand-painted floral curtains from her grandmother's apartment in Copenhagen. In 1983, Kirsten came upon The Brooklyn Quilters Guild show and fell in love with quilting. The idea of creating beautiful, usable objects resonated with her. At the same time, quilting allowed her to explore the possibilities of geometric designs. Through the use of contemporary fabrics, she created the modern look that her bowls are known for today. Kirsten has been teaching quilting and bowl making for more than ten years. Galleries and museums in New York and New Jersey have showcased her pieces. She is a member and former co-president of The Brooklyn Quilters Guild and a member of The Textile Study Group of New York. She is the author of Modern Fabric Art Bowls, published by C&T Publishing in 2021. Kirsten works and lives in Brooklyn, NY.
