Debbie Maddy

Debbie Maddy is a textile artist passionate about shibori techniques and natural indigo dye. She began her career with simple resists and has advanced to more intricate stitching, folding, clamping, and Arashi pole wrapping. Debbie has traveled to Japan twice to attend the Japanese Textile Workshops led by Bryan Whitehead at his Japanese silk-farming farmhouse. The daily classes emphasized the techniques of pleating and stitching, as in Katano shibori, and pleating and wrapping for white shadow shibori. While there, she attended classes with a master paste resist stencil dyer. Debbie studied in England with Jane Callender, an expert in stitched shibori. In the United States, she has been fortunate to learn from traditional Japanese artist Takayuki Ishii and African artists Gasali Adeyemo of Nigeria and Aboubakar Fofano of Mali. Debbie searches for knowledge from all of the Shibori textbooks she can acquire. She cherishes her Japanese shibori books even though she cannot read the text. Debbie is passionate about shibori and indigo and loves sharing her art with others. Debbie lives in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. debbiemaddy.com
