This playful appliqué-focused course shows you how to turn fabric shapes into expressive characters using your sewing machine as a sketching tool. Taught by boundary‑pushing fiber artist Angela McPherson, it’s designed for quilters and stitchers who want their appliqué to feel lively, detailed, and full of personality—not flat or static. The emphasis is on confident, creative stitching rather than perfection or fuss.

You’ll start by preparing simple appliqué pieces and using water‑soluble stabilizer to transfer clean sketch lines, making it easier to outline faces, feathers, folds, florals, and tiny details with control. From there, you’ll build a toolkit of thread‑sketching methods—whimsical outlines, on‑point stitching, and the short‑spurts approach—to add motion, depth, and character without losing accuracy. The course explores how thread sketching layered over appliqué can add movement, detail, and artistic emphasis to your designs. Finally, you’ll apply everything in three fun project categories: a journal cover, small wearable or decorative patches, and holiday or everyday ornaments, giving you a collection of finished pieces and a repeatable approach you can bring to any future appliqué work.

Supplies You'll Need

Supplies: Supplies for Both Patches & Ornaments

Scrap Fabric
If you’re new to sewing, one or two 5" charm packs are a great place to start.

Batting
Amount depends on how many pieces you make. One 5" square covers one project.

Cut-Away Stabilizer
Available by the roll or in pre-cut sheets. If using pre-cut, choose 10" × 12" sheets.

Water-Soluble Stabilizer (Clear)
Sulky Solvy is a great beginner option.

Uni-ball Fine Pen
Color doesn’t matter (black is commonly used).

Thread
50wt polyester embroidery thread recommended (Hemingworth preferred).
Any thread is fine as long as the needle matches the thread and fabric.

Pre-Wound Bobbins (Plenty!)
Match bobbin thread to top thread when possible, or stay within the same color family.

Embroidery or Topstitch Needles
Recommended: Organ Embroidery 90/14.

Darning or Hopping Foot
Used for free-motion quilting and thread sketching.

Stitch Plates / Feet
A wide stitch plate is required for zigzag stitches.
Single stitch plates cannot do zigzag.
A wide darning or hopping foot is needed for zigzag stitching.

Fusible Two-Sided Web
Steam-A-Seam 2 recommended.
A few pre-cut sheets are usually sufficient.

Good Sharp Scissors
Karen Kay Buckley scissors recommended.

Tweezers
Sharp computer tweezers work well for tiny details.

Fray Check or Clear Glue
