Author and instructor Becky Goldsmith shares her years of hand-sewing expertise as you start your own EPP adventure.

In Hexie Flowers 101, Becky shares various methods for preparing fabric shapes, basting, stitching, knotting, and sewing Y-seams. First, she’ll cover the supplies needed that are easy to access and inexpensive. Next, you’ll learn how to fussy cut, a fun technique that allows you to showcase a fabric motif on your hexies. Becky demonstrates a variety of ways to prep the fabric shapes and different ways to baste the fabric to paper, allowing you to choose what works best for you. Once you have a bunch of hexies prepared, learn how to whip-stitch them together to make a hexie flower. The course includes a link to an inspirational Pinterest Board that shows lots of ways to use your hexie flowers.

Supplies You'll Need

Supplies Needed forHexie Flowers 101: Explore English Paper Piecing

Note: If a pattern or templates are included, they will be found inside the course after the course is purchased.

1 package of hexie paper pieces with 100 +/- hexies in the size you prefer
40wt 100% cotton thread in a light color for thread basting
Fine, strong 100% cotton thread to sew hexies together. Choose neutrals or colors to blend with your fabric. (I use 50wt, 2-ply thread from Aurifil; 60wt, 2-ply Efina thread from Wonderfil; and 80wt, 2-ply thread from Aurifil.)
Needles: Choose ones that suit your hands. (My favorites: #9 Crewel Needle by Bohin for basting; #9 Piecing Needle by Tulip for sewing.)
A firm graphite pencil for light fabrics (I use a Blackwing 602 graphite pencil)
A pencil sharpener, if you’re using a wooden pencil
Sewline or similar 9mm mechanical pencil with white ceramic lead for dark fabrics
Glue stick for glue basting: choose either or both—1 fabric glue pen (my choice); or 1 Elmer’s school glue (optional).
A sandpaper board or a sheet of fine-grain sandpaper

Optional Supplies

Thimble or leather thimble pad if your finger gets sore
Sealable bags for storing your hexies
Acrylic template with seam allowance to match your hexies
Small Wonder Clips
Rotary cutter and mat (optional—not truly necessary for hexies. If you already have one, you may use it.)
