The Story Behind The Patchwork Companion
Share
Hi friends, it’s Sandy from Thai Charm LLC here. When I started working on my new book, The Patchwork Companion, I kept coming back to one idea: confidence doesn’t come from doing everything perfectly. It comes from understanding what you’re doing, one step at a time.
Most of us don’t learn quilting all at once. We learn slowly. One block, one project, one small “aha” moment that makes the next thing feel just a little easier.
That’s the heart behind this book.

A Thoughtful Approach to Learning
The Patchwork Companion is designed to help you build foundational piecing skills while also learning how to work with color in a way that feels natural and intuitive.
Inside, you’ll find 14 quilt projects that build on each other. Each one focuses on a technique or concept, but more importantly, each one is meant to help you feel more confident in your decisions as you go.
Because quilting isn’t just about following steps. It’s about understanding the process and trusting yourself at the machine. That’s something I also try to carry into the patterns I design and share in my work. I’ve always believed patterns should feel clear, approachable, and supportive, while still being fun and enjoyable, no matter your experience level.

The Details That Support the Process
As I was working on the book, I found myself paying even more attention to the little details that make a difference. Not just in how a quilt looks, but in how it feels to make.
That’s part of what led me to create a thread collection, Patchwork Companion with Aurifil.

The colors were chosen to feel versatile and easy to reach for, whether you’re piecing, quilting, or adding small details. Different weights are included so you can explore a range of techniques, from everyday piecing to more textured finishes.
It’s really an extension of the same idea behind the book. Supporting you through the process, without overcomplicating it.
Where You Go From Here
Once you start to feel more comfortable with your skills, I hope you’ll take that confidence and extend it beyond The Patchwork Companion.
Find something that sparks your inspiration. Try a new technique. Choose a color combination you might not normally reach for. Let yourself be a little curious.
That’s often where the most growth happens.
One of my upcoming patterns, the Little Birds Quilt, is a great example of that next step. It brings together a mix of techniques like sewing curves, working with orange peel shapes, half square triangles, and stitch-and-flip construction, all in one project.
It’s the kind of quilt that gently challenges you while still building on the skills you already have. The pattern will be available later this June, and if you’d like to be the first to know when it’s released, you can sign up here.
A Gentle Reminder
You don’t have to rush.
You don’t have to master everything at once.
Take your time with each step. Let yourself learn as you go. And most importantly, enjoy the process. Because that’s where confidence really begins.
Happy sewing,
Sandy
