The Five Phases of Losing Your Quilting Scissors
Share
There are two kinds of quilting enthusiasts: those who know where their scissors are and those who must clean your sewing room from top to bottom in order to find them. I fall firmly in the second category. A Sunday morning sewing session which is supposed to reduce my weekly stress quickly degenerates into a tactical sweep of the entire house.
Phase One – Denial. “They MUST be where you put them last!”, your ever-helpful husband declares. Of course, they are not on or anywhere near the cutting table.
Phase Two – Accusations. Each family member is interrogated. They all deny culpability. Little Jimmy swears he didn’t use them for his Social Studies diorama, and you regard your husband with suspicion when he attests that he most definitely did not use them to open a package of socks.
Phase Three – Bargaining. You swear if you can just find them this time, you’ll do a better job of keeping track of them in the future.
Phase Four – Acceptance. You give up and use the scissors you find in the kitchen drawer. They aren’t sharp enough; the fabric gets mangled and now it’s also a little sticky.
Phase Five – Discovery! Occurring long after your spark of enthusiasm for sewing has passed, you do indeed find your lost scissors. They are in the freezer, behind the TV, in the drawer with the bills or possibly in your car. They should never be in any of those places, yet here we are. You promise from here on out, you’ll put them back in the right place. Next time.
