What is African wax fabric? According to Marion, “The origin of African wax prints dates back to the nineteenth century during the colonial period when Dutch colonists took inspiration from Indonesian batiks and began creating original and highly colorful patterns. When the Ghanaian soldiers who fought for the Dutch colony in Indonesia returned home, they brought back those fabrics that had captured their compatriots’ hearts.” Like batiks from Indonesia, the fabric is waxed so the colors are similar on both sides.
