What's In a Name?

Do you have problems naming your quilts and other projects?
Some of the C&T authors love naming their quilts. Others find that the hardest part of the process. As publishers we spend hours discussing names (AKA titles) for our books. As both an author and the Creative Director here, I had to think long and hard about the title for my new bag, which became one of C&T’s new patterns… Lucy’s 3-in-1 kraft•tex Bag Pattern.
Okay… That’s not necessarily true. Maybe I didn’t think about it long and hard.
Another C&Ter, Betsy LaHonta, and I both design bag patterns and so far ours have been personified. The 3-in-1 Betsy Bag (that was one of Betsy’s, obviously), The 3-in-1 Kiki Bag Pattern (Kiki is my sister-in-law), and Betsy’s new bag is named after her daughter ( Caitlin’s 3-in-1 kraft•tex Bag Pattern). Clearly the range of options open to the naming committee was somewhat dictated by tradition and theme. My daughter’s name isn’t Lucy; her name is already taken by a different bag pattern, so that was out. So the group proposed names of the women in our lives, including the people sitting at the table and in other parts of our building.
I threw out there “Lucy.” The Lucy bag. Lucy is the name of our fabulously creative lifestyle photographer. And everyone loved it!
I’d like to say that it was our photographer of whom I was thinking when I proposed the name. But I don’t want to lie to you twice in one blog post.
Meet the other Lucy. Her official name is Birthday Bella Lucine. I’m sure she wishes she were a fabulously creative photographer. But she’s not. She’s a bulldog. And a bag.
