Wavy Free-Motion Quilting

WAVY WAVY

WAVY WAVY shows that a simple design can add movement and texture to your quilt. It's just an added bonus that it's so easy to quilt. This design is perfect for medium to large areas of negative space or as an allover quilting design. 

Note: The instructions are just to teach you the technique. When you are quilting this design, you will find your own rhythm.

1. Starting a few inches below the top of the quilting area, quilt a gently waving line from one side to the other.

Note: Starting the design a small distance from the top of the quilting area allows you to get a wavy line on which to build the rest of the design.

2. Travel up the edge of the quilting area about 1/2˝. Quilt a wavy line that echoes the first wavy line. At a random point while echoing, run into the line below. 

Note: When you run into the line below, you want the lines to look as if they are merging.

3. Quilt a line echoing back the opposite direction, returning to the edge.

4. Travel up the edge of the quilting area and then echo across to the other edge of the quilting area. Traveling along the edge ensures that your lines will stay somewhat horizontal.

5. Work your way back across the quilt, running into the line below.

6. Repeat the technique in Steps 1–5, filling in the area.

7. Travel down along the edge until you are about 1/2˝ below the first line (from Step 1). Repeat the technique in Steps 1–6 to fill in the quilting area.

Tip: You can add more movement with this design by running into lines more often.
