Joyce R. Becker has written a series of books that teach amazing techniques for landscape quilts. In Beautiful Landscape Quilts, Becker includes instructional photographs demonstrating her techniques in greater detail. She covers everything from digital images to surface design, as well as the basics of tools, fabric selection, and design process. Becker’s stunning quilt projects featuring mountains, water, forests, and winter scenes are dissected to show how she achieved the final result. Some of the ideas she offers I have used to great advantage, like tulle overlays. I used a blue tulle on a quilt to give it a misty look and to tone down the fabric colors. She used strips of tulle to create the effect of sunlight through trees in Fantasy Forest. Becker uses spray adhesive for fussy cut fabric pieces, which allows for repositioning. She shows how to make needle lace and to use batting for water details. Readers learn about the various pencils, pens, and fabric dyes available for shading and highlighting your project. Quilts made by students who employed her techniques are shared along with their inspiration. Becker includes seven projects to try, each with its materials and supply list, cutting instructions, templates and construction steps. The projects include mountain scenes, garden scenes, a lake scene, a floral quilt, winter trees, and ocean scenes. There are a lot of great ideas in this book. I am sure it will inspire you to make your own landscape quilts! I know it inspires me! I received a free ebook from the publisher through Edelweiss. My review is fair and unbiased.
