Felt Wee Folk- New Adventures Class Plan

BLOSSOM FAIRY DOLL

From Felt Wee Folk- New Adventures by Salley Mavor

Class Description

Make an adorable acorn-capped 3 ½” fairy doll with faux flower skirt and wool felt tunic. Learn how to wrap a bendable armature with embroidery floss. Intermediate hand stitching experience is recommended for wrapping the body and embellishing the fairy’s felt tunic. Gain skill in painting a face on the doll’s wooden bead head. After her head, hair and hat are glued in place, she’s ready to fly!

Class Length

2 to 3 hours, depending on students’ experience level.

Tips: For finding items such as faux flowers and acorn caps, refer students to chapter 2, “Gathering Materials”, page 11. Alternatively, the shop may want to collect and sell these items that are more challenging to find. The shop can offer for sale certain materials, like wool felt pieces for the tunic, wool roving for hair, wooden beads for heads and embroidery floss. Another suggestion is that shops buy the supplies in bulk and sell individual kits to students.

Classroom Preparation

Provide water containers for rinsing paint brushes and a disposable surface for mixing paint (I use plastic or metal jar tops) and paper towel sheets for drying brushes. The shop may want to have a selection of paints available to share, as only tiny bits of paint are used. Good lighting is also important.
