A native of New York, Julie Hirota was raised in Southern California with her younger brother and sister. She ventured up to Davis, where she attended the University of California and received dual bachelor degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Material Science Engineering. It was her experiences with clay, glass, fiber, jewelry casting, and print making at the campus craft center that led Julie to a love of art and fine craft.
Julie permanently relocated to the basin of the Sierra Foothills in 1993 for her first professional career assignment in Mechanical Engineering. At the same time, she met and married her husband, Aaron, also a Davis graduate in Mechanical Engineering. Today, the two enjoy gardening, hiking, and spending time with their daughter and their pets, 3 cats and a dog.
