Great book
The residents of Gasper’s Cove have another mystery to solve in addition to trying to save the independence of their small community. When lead character Valerie and her friends hear that Mayor Mike Murphy has signed a deal to merge Gasper’s Cove with the mainland community of Drummond, they consider several ways to save Gasper’s Cove including blowing up the causeway that separates Gasper’s Island from the mainland, forming a human chain to keep community members in and others out, and using their crafting skills to knit a giant barrier with a button up gate for emergencies. Their ideas pay homage to who they are, as Valerie relates that the real power lies in being who you are, and for her and her friends, they are crafters at heart. The mystery begins when the mayor winds up dead, and the race for a new mayor heats up along with the accusations of who murdered Mighty Mike. Valerie’s cousin Darlene throws her hat in the ring with Valerie as her campaign manager. The other contenders include Brian Nickerson from a longstanding political family, Charlie Landry, who always runs to bring awareness to local issues, and Elliot Carter, who has a desperate need to be the head of something. During the race, the slander and suspicion are flying making the book’s title seem all the more appropriate. Emodi again fills the story with lots of Nova Scotia and Canadian references including our famed folk artist Maud Lewis, and though I thought I had the mystery solved several times, I have to say I was surprised in the end. The story had a good pace with a well-crafted story that kept me interested from beginning to end. Another successful Gasper’s Cove Mystery.
