Stitch a Christmas Heirloom with Birds in Toyland
May 2nd 2022
Becky Goldsmith and Linda Jenkins have brought us another delightful project from Piece O’ Cake Designs: Birds in Toyland, a festive, happy Christmas quilt with all sorts of charming details.
What’s so great about Birds in Toyland is its versatility. You can make the quilt and the blocks your own by choosing between two colorways (a light or dark background) and two block sizes (8˝ square or 10˝ square), with the option to add embellishments. In addition, you can create the blocks using wool hand appliqué, needle-turn hand appliqué, or both!

Birds in Toyland III by Linda Jenkins. Wool appliqué and cotton pieced blocks with dark backgrounds.
There are 13 blocks to create in this pieced Irish Chain quilt, and you can use the individual blocks to make smaller quilts, pillows, and more. The book’s gallery provides some ideas to inspire. Check out this cute mini quilt by Linda Jenkins, called Winter Birds:
Don’t forget to check out Becky’s Birds in Toyland course on Creative Spark. There, you can create the quilt in an online learning environment, which includes access to course videos, the Creative Spark community, and discussion with Becky herself.
