Simple Quilt, Beautiful Fabric
Posted by Vanessa Goertzen on Mar 30th 2017
One of the things I love about simple quilts is the opportunity to let beautiful fabric do all the talking. Of course, it does not get any simpler than a basic block quilt—and that's exactly where I begin in my book, Charm School—18 Quilts from 5'' Squares.
This quilt design is called Modern Basic and uses graphic prints and solids from April Rhodes' Arizona collection to make a bold statement. The idea was to create the perfect beginner-friendly project while proving that fabric choice, fabric placement, and the finishing touches (the actual quilting part!) can really elevate a design's impact. One of my favorite things about this particular quilt is the custom quilting by Natalia Bonner.
The thing I love about 5" squares is that there are many ways to cut them from fabric. Even though the precut charm squares by Moda Fabrics were the inspiration for this book, it is very easy to substitute fat quarters, scraps, and more. Don't hesitate to make your own charm packs. Choose what you'd like and get started.
