Sew Lingerie: Visiting the Author's Studio

As one of C&T’s editors, I spend most of my time working directly with our authors. We go through the whole process together, brainstorming when the book is just an idea, and celebrating when we get to hold the first copies in our hands.
But, we rarely get to meet in person. C&T’s authors and employees are spread out across the country (and world!), so most of our communication is digital. But, this spring, I got a chance to change that––at least in one instance!
This past April, I traveled to Philadelphia for a wedding. And, I got the lovely pleasure of meeting our Philadelphia-based author, Maddie Kulig! Maddie’s book, Sew Lingerie, comes out this fall, and is nearing its final stages of design and production with C&T.
When I mentioned that I was visiting her city, Maddie invited me for a visit to the Madalynne Studio! She gave me a tour of her workspace, I got to meet some of her sewing students in town for a workshop, and we got to chat in person for the first time! Maddie’s space is gorgeous and unique, crafted to fit her work-style perfectly and adorned with beautiful rugs, decor, and goodies. Not to mention the lingerie––Madalynne produces such stunning garments in fun colors, prints, and combinations. We gushed over fabric samples for her upcoming collections, and agreed that really, no sewist likes cutting out pattern pieces.

We finished up with the most special touch of all: a look at all the garment samples she created for the book! The book has eleven (11!) complete patterns and projects with step-by-step guidance alongside its full compendium of techniques and instructions on how to create perfect-fitting and versatile lingerie. I’ve seen all eleven patterns, sewn up in various colorways and sizes, countless times in the book’s gorgeous photography. But, seeing them in person was exceptional! The fabrics glowed and sparkled, the materials were soft and delicate, and the craftsmanship was next level. It took my appreciation for this project to a whole new height.
