Represent! Embroidery Book Tour

Posted by Bianca Springer on Oct 17th 2022

My name is Bianca Springer. I am a garment maker, pattern designer, and embroidery artist. I am so excited to share my new book Represent! Embroidery Stitch 10 Colorful Projects & 100 Designs Featuring a Full Range of Shapes, Skin Tones & Hair Textures.

It is with great joy, that I wrote this book to fill a void in the hand embroidery creative space. I enjoy hand embroidery, and, over the years, I have purchased many books to practice the craft. With those designs, I found myself tweaking them to better represent my hair texture, body, and skin. The designs in those books were not representative of my features and experiences, and I had to modify those designs to look like me. The people in Represent! Embroidery are varied, and it is my hope that I have presented more than are usually seen. This book centers the underrepresented with the goal of making us feel seen and feel worthy. We all deserve to see ourselves reflected in all areas of our craft.

This book is an opportunity for makers doing the active work of anti-racism to express that in the creative work of their hands. It is an opportunity to explore other perspectives and to try something new. It is my hope that this book brings the maker joy, delight, and a mediative form of creative escapism.

I had to learn techniques and source materials and fibers to reflect what I wanted to replicate. In doing so, for my own personal creative expression, I knew others could benefit from that knowledge. This book will guide the reader, regardless of race, in tips and tricks for embroidering realistic hair types, adding realistic skin colors, and customizing the designs to represent whomever they like.

The 10 projects in this book are fun, practical, and teach hand and machine sewing skills. The 100+ designs will delight, inspire, challenge, uplift, and encourage you. Think beyond the hoop and add them to clothing, bags, accessories, and home décor.
