Quilt Out Loud Book Tour
Posted by Thomas Knauer on Feb 6th 2023
Hello, quilters. I am so happy to be kicking off the blog tour for my latest book: Quilt Out Loud. This is the book I’ve been wanting to do since just about the beginning of my life in quilting. It is all about words and the ways they can be used to make impactful quilts, how you can find and use your voice making quilts about the things and issues you care about the most.
Over the past decade, I’ve returned again and again to using text in a variety of forms on my quilts to talk about everything from my relationship with my family to the police shootings of young African-American men. And therein lies the beauty and power of words: they can be used to say anything. The possibilities are unlimited; to get started, you just need to decide what you want to say.
The book is full of examples that I hope will inspire you to start quilting out loud. There are quilts that use Braille, Morse code, and even binary to make quilts with secret messages. And there are quilts that use the standard alphabet in an array of ways to explore both the joyful and the tragic and just about everything in between. I hope these quilts serve as a starting point for your imagination to find just what you want to say.
I’ve organized the book by technique and included tutorials on using appliqué, reverse-appliqué, pieced letters (with a pieced alphabet I designed just for the book), paper piecing, and finally, quilted text. There are alphabets you can download for preparing your applique, instructions for the pieced alphabet, and even a couple of projects for you to make.
It still feels unbelievable that this book is finally out there after years of thinking about it. I hope you’ll pick up a copy of your own, explore the possibilities, and then head over to your sewing space and add text to your quilting vocabulary.
