Marshall Field's at Christmastime
Posted by Deirdre Quirk on Aug 10th 2015
If you have ever visited the National Historic Landmark Marshall Field’s Building in Chicago (now known as Macy’s on State Street) at Christmastime, you know it is a sight you are not likely to forget. The rows of decked-out window displays, the enormous tree in the Walnut Room…it’s Christmas splendor at its finest. And what better way to capture that Christmas magic and bring it into your own home than with Windy City Christmas by Diana Richards and Jan McGrath?
This wonderful book, our first release from our new Kansas City Star Quilts imprint, features fifteen totally charming projects that reflect the beauty of Marshall Field’s at Christmastime. The grandeur and glitter of the holiday window displays, along with iconic images of the store, such as the huge clocks and Frango mints, are embroidered and appliquéd on quilt blocks, pillows, table linens, a tote bag, and a ruffled tree skirt. Aprons for parents and kids to wear while baking for Santa and jolly jester stocking with lots of space for candy and toys help to make the holiday extra special for everyone.
Diana Richards has a very personal connection to all of this Christmas grandeur–when she was a girl, she made annual visits to Marshall Field’s at Christmastime, and she has continued the tradition with her own daughter. That spirit of making family traditions carries over into Windy City Christmas, where all of the projects could easily be the start of new treasured tradition in your own family.
