Welcome to Installment #6, the final Installment, of Kim Diehl’s Simple Whatnots IV Mystery Stitch-Along! Read below to find directions for cutting and piecing fabric.
CUTTING:
- From scraps of assorted prints, cut a total of:
- 44 flying-geese unit squares, 2” x 2”
- From scraps of cream prints, cut a total of:
- 22 flying-geese background rectangles, 2” x 3 1/2"
- From scraps of each of 2 different assorted complimentary prints, cut and separate by print:
- 2 outer-border corner-post squares, 2” x 2”
- From the fat quarter of print chosen for the binding, cut:
- 3 binding strips, 2 1/2" x 21” (For Kim’s chubby binding method provided in her Simple Whatnots IV book, reduce the strip width to 2”)
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Referring to the Cookies and Milk project beginning on page 63, “Completing the Patchwork Blocks”, follow steps 1 – 2 to piece a total of 22 scrappy flying geese units measuring 2” x 3 1/2", including the seam allowances.
2. Using six pieced flying geese units per strip, refer to the assembly diagram provided below to piece two side outer border strips measuring 2” x 18 1/2", including the seam allowances. Press the seam allowances as directed by the arrows. Join these pieced strips to the right and left sides of the Installment #5 quilt top as shown. Press as directed.
3. Again referring to the assembly diagram for the orientation and number of the flying geese
units, use the remaining pieced flying geese units and the four complimentary-print 2” squares to piece two top/bottom outer border strips measuring 2” x 18 1/2", including the seam allowances. Press the seam allowances as directed. Join these completed top/bottom outer border strips to the remaining top and bottom edges of the quilt top. Press as directed. The completed quilt top should now measure 18 1/2" x 21 1/2", including the seam allowances.
4. Referring to “Kim’s Quiltmaking Basics” beginning on page 120 for details as needed, layer the quilt top with the 24” x 27” rectangle of batting and the 2/3 yard of backing print. Quilt the layers as desired. Join the binding strips to make one length and use it to bind the quilt.
