CUTTING:

  • From scraps of each of 4 different assorted prints, cut and separate by print:
    • 8 background-print squares, 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" (combined total of 32)
  • From scraps of each of 4 additional complimentary assorted prints, cut and separate by print:
    • 4 outer granny-squares, 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" (combined total of 16)
  • From scraps of each of 4 more assorted prints, cut and separate by print:
    • 1 inner granny-square, 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" (combined total of 4)

Choose one set of pieces cut for each of the three entries above, and group them together to make one block patchwork set. Repeat for a total of four block patchwork sets.

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Referring to the Cookies and Milk project beginning on page 63, “Piecing the Block Center Units”, and taking note of the suggestion to use a slightly scant 1/4" seam allowance, use the block patchwork sets and follow steps 1 – 3 to piece a total of four block center units measuring 3 1/2" square, including the seam allowances.

2. Referring to the illustration, use the four pieced block center units and the Churn Dash A blocks reserved from Installment #3 to piece a total of two middle border top/bottom strips measuring 3 1/2" x 15 1/2", including the seam allowances. Press the seam allowances open. Join these two pieced strips to the top and bottom edges of the Installment #4 quilt top as shown. Press as directed. The pieced quilt top with the completed middle border should measure 15 1/2" x 18 1/2", including the seam allowances.
