CUTTING

  • From scraps of assorted prints, cut a total of:
    • 16 squares, 3” x 3”; cut each square in half diagonally twice to yield 4 triangles (combined total of 64)

Note: For a scrappier look, Kim chose to cut a handful of additional 3” squares and discard the resulting extra unused triangles. The choice is yours!

INSTRUCTIONS
1. Referring to the Bricks and Mortar project beginning on page 75, “Piecing the Hourglass Units”, follow steps 1 – 2 to piece a total of 16 hourglass units measuring 2” square, including the seam allowances.

2. Referring to the illustration below, join eight hourglass units end to end. Press the seam allowances open. Repeat to piece a total of two side border strips measuring 2” x 12 1/2", including the seam allowances. Join these pieced strips to the right and left sides of the Installment #2 quilt top as shown. Press as directed by the arrows. The pieced quilt top with side middle borders should measure 12 1/2" x 15 1/2", including the seam allowances.
