Posted by Kim Diehl on Jan 17th 2025
Welcome to Installment #2 of Kim Diehl’s Simple Whatnots IV Mystery Stitch-Along! Read below to find directions for cutting and piecing fabric.
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Referring to the Safe Keeping project beginning on page 21, “Piecing and Adding the Border” beginning on page 24, follow step 1 (using 16 assorted-print rectangles and one cream 1” x 8 1/2" strip for each unit) to sew a total of four pieced border units measuring 2 1/2" x 8 1/2", including the seam allowances. Press the assorted rectangles as directed by the arrow, and then press the seam allowance of the cream strip toward the cream strip.
2. Using the cream and complimentary-print triangles cut from 3” squares, follow step 3 of the same section to piece, press, and trim four half-square-triangle units as noted in the book.
3. Join the assorted-print edge of two pieced border units from step 1 to the right and left sides of the pieced block from Installment #1 as shown below. Press as directed by the arrows. Join the four half-square-triangle units from the previous step to the remaining two pieced border units as shown below. Press as directed. Referring once again to the illustration below, join these two completed border units to the remaining top and bottom edges of the block unit. Press as directed. The pieced quilt top with inner border should measure 12 1/2" square, including the seam allowances.
4. Reserve this pieced Installment #2 unit and all fabric scraps for Installment #3.
