Kim Diehl’s Mystery Stitch-Along: Installment #6
Sep 8th 2023
Welcome to Installment #6 of Kim Diehl’s Mystery Stitch-Along! Read below to find directions for cutting and piecing fabric.
Cutting
- From the assorted print scraps (including remnants of previously used prints), cut a combined total of:
- 68 squares, 1 1⁄2" × 1 1⁄2"
Instructions
- Using Simple Whatnots III, refer to the This and That project and follow step 1 of “5 Checkerboard Units” on page 71 as a guide to join 16 assorted print 1 1⁄2" squares end to end to make a checkerboard strip. Repeat to piece a total of two short checkerboard strips, 1 1⁄2" × 16 1⁄2", including the seam allowances. Do not join the strips as shown in the book.
- Using two sets of 18 assorted print 1 1⁄2" squares, repeat step 1 to piece a total of two long checkerboard strips measuring 1 1⁄2" × 18 1⁄2", including the seam allowances.
- Join a short checkerboard strip to the right and left sides of the quilt center. Press. Join the long checkerboard strips to the remaining top and bottom edges of the quilt center. Press. The pieced quilt top should now measure 18 1⁄2" square, including the seam allowances.
Pressing Tip
For a quick and easy finish, I pressed the seam allowances of all my checkerboard squares in the same direction. When it came time to add the strips to the quilt top, if any given seam allowance worked better pressed in the opposite direction, I made a quick adjustment and re-pressed it for seam allowances that nest together perfectly.
