Kim Diehl’s Mystery Stitch-Along: Installment #4
Aug 25th 2023
Welcome to Installment #4 of Kim Diehl’s Mystery Stitch-Along! Read below to find directions for cutting and piecing fabric.
Cutting
From each of 6 assorted bitty bricks, cut:
- 1 strip, 3" × 10 1⁄2"; crosscut into 2 squares, 3" × 3"
(combined total of 12). Cut each square in half diagonally once to yield 2 triangles (total of 4; combined total of 24). Organize the triangles by print into 6 Pinwheel sets.
From the assorted cream scraps, cut:
- 12 squares, 3" × 3"; cut each square in half diagonally once to yield 2 triangles (combined total of 24). Note: For a scrappier look, cut additional squares from more cream prints; you’ll have leftover triangles that can be discarded.
Instructions
- Using Simple Whatnots III, refer to the This and That project and follow “1 Pinwheel Block” beginning on page 68 to piece one Pinwheel block from each Pinwheel set for a total of six Pinwheel blocks. Note: Disregard the measurements given for the half-square-triangle units and finished Pinwheel blocks in the book; for our mystery sampler, the units will finish slightly larger.
- Use a rotary cutter and an acrylic ruler to trim the blocks to 4 1⁄2" square, including the seam allowances.
PROJECT NOTES
- You will need a copy of Simple Whatnots III for individual block instructions for this mystery quilt.
- Page numbers referenced in each section may differ if you’re using an eBook, so project names and section titles are referenced to help you easily find the needed steps.
- For the best use of your fabrics, please save your scraps each week to use in subsequent weeks.
