Quilters are notorious for “collecting” fabric. Despite the pleas for moderation and restraint from puzzled and exasperated spouses, many have been known to procure copious amount of fabric when they already have plenty at home. But why? Let’s take a look at some possible explanations for this curious behavior.
• It makes me happy – In these stressful times, new fabric for the stash can be a mood lifter. Just looking at it and thinking of all its possibilities may be all you need, even if you don’t have time to sew right now.
I really did need it – There is the slimmest of possibilities that you really did need that fabric. It is even conceivable that you ran out of something, despite your stash’s impressive size.
It was the PERFECT fabric – Did you ever start a quilt project only to later run into something that would have been a perfect fit for that project? It may be too late for this quilt, but you can always buy it for next time.
A hobby in and of itself – Many quilters will argue that collecting fabric is actually a hobby in and of itself, separate from quilting or sewing. My “stash vs. completed quilt ratio” would robustly support that argument.
SEW much potential – If you are insanely busy with work, parenting or just plain life, maybe you don’t have the time to undertake a big quilting project. However, planning a quilt that you might make someday can be just as satisfying. Finally, as far as anyone else is concerned, that fabric was on sale anyway.
