Grilles and Donuts Quilt

Besides working on quilting books, several of us in the office actually make quilts, too! When we are not too busy, we have an in-house sewing group that makes blocks for one member’s quilt. For my turn last year, I chose the Lunch Box pattern in Vanessa Goertzen’s Charm School—18 Quilts from 5˝ Squares to make a quilt for my cousin. My coworkers made the initial nine-patch blocks, using a variety of blue and Ford Mustang fabric, to commemorate his high-school car.
I sliced and pieced the nine-patches into larger blocks and put the top together. Then Ruthmary, one of our sales representatives, offered to quilt it. She uses her longarm quilting machine frequently to help us finish quilts.
When the quilting was done, Ruthmary pointed out that the straight quilting looked like the grille on a car, and we decided that the loop-de-loops in the blue areas were like a car “spinning donuts in the parking lot”!
