Foundation Paper Piecing with Mary Hertel
Apr 12th 2022
Mary, who goes by Marney in her everyday life, hails from Osh Kosh, Wisconsin and has written her sixth book with us, Sew Cute Baby Animals. If you’ve ever seen one of Mary’s other titles with us, you will know she has managed to break down foundation paper piecing into an artful science. Like her previous books, the animals are absolutely adorable, only this time, she has tweaked the designs to have softer angles in their face and cute Kawaii-esque eyes.
If you are like me, and have never dabbled much in foundation paper piecing beyond straight lines and easy shapes, Sew Cute Animals would be a great next step. If you want to know the basics of how foundation paper piecing works, check out this video we did with Mary back in 2017. Just like Mary says, “If you can count and sew straight lines, you can foundation paper piece!“
But what makes Mary’s patterns so great? You can see from this calf block, Mary not only colorizes her blocks to make it easy to know which fabric to put where, but she also leaves the block whole so you can understand how the block comes together. But wait! There’s more!! Under “Directions” she even tells you how many copies to make and which sections (A,B,C etc) to cut from each paper.
Like all her books, Mary has standardized her blocks so that any animal from any one of her books can be adapted to fit almost any project from any book. If you were to purchase all six of Mary’s books, you could make 94 different projects! Talk about bang for your buck!! I highly recommend purchasing Carol Doak’s Foundation Paper along with Sew Cute Baby Animals. That way, you can print all the templates you want directly from your computer or smart device to your home printer on Carol’s fantastic paper!
