Fine-tune your patchwork with a handy pocket guide
Sep 6th 2022
For anyone who is a beginner in quilting like me, Perfect Piecing Handy Pocket Guide by Patty Murphy will quickly become your new best friend.
Inside, the book features a breakdown of cutting and sewing, pressing fabric, and block piecing tips and techniques with a three-step approach, such as problem, diagnosis, and solution. Some of the blocks included for readers are the Four-Patch, Nine-Patch, half-square triangle, quarter-square triangle, and Flying Geese.
I was interested in learning more about some of the simpler blocks like the Four-Patch and Nine-Patch, as I have heard they’re some of the simplest quilt blocks to piece together. With Patty’s expert advice and techniques, she has helped me grasp the Four-Patch quilt block by showing me what to do if my seams don't meet perfectly.
What you don't want.
How your block should look.
In the above example, the diagnosis is clear in the Handy Pocket Guide: "Sewing an inaccurate 1/4˝ seam allowance or pressing all seams to one side can create bulk and seams that don’t meet."
Perfect Piecing Handy Pocket Guide is a fabulous introduction book that is clear and concise for all beginner and experienced quilters. If you are interested in studying up before you dive into block piecing, this is the perfect-sized book to carry with you on the go.
