Fall in Love with Zakka Wool Appliqué

Minki Kim’s stitched illustrations always make me smile. Minki is an artist who notices and appreciates the little things in everyday life, and wants to share those happy thoughts with others!

Her new book, Zakka Wool Appliqué, has more than 60 new patterns in her signature whimsical style. This time, Minki shows her work in wool appliqué, embellished with a few basic embroidery stitches like the backstitch, chain stitch, lazy daisy stitch, and French knot. Diagrams for all of the embroidery stitches are included.

You can use the patterns in quick projects, like some new coasters, or in other useful projects for yourself, your home, or as a gift that will be appreciated and used. The projects include the coasters, a pencil case, a boxy sewing case, pocket folder, pillow, and handbag.

Little Patch Coasters, 6'' in diameter

Jardin Pillow, 21'' x 21''

Pocket Pencil Case, 7 1/2'' wide x 4'' high x 4'' deep

There are plenty of cooking, sewing, pet, and floral motifs that will take you no time at all to stitch (look at that adorable toaster!), and some bigger designs that would be fun to stitch as well.

No special tools are necessary--just a little fabric, some perle cotton threads, needles, and sewing tools. While you can cut the patterns from fusible web, Minki often uses just a bit of fusible tape on the back of the pieces to hold them in place for stitching.

And if you would rather stick with Minki’s original stitched illustration style, which features cotton prints and straight stitching by machine, you can do that too. Here’s the Sew Happy pattern, made both ways.

Sew Happy Mini Quilt, 12'' x 12'' in quilting cottons and sewn on the machine

Sewing Time Pocket Folder, 10 1/2'' x 10'', hand-appliquéd in wool felt, embellished with hand embroidery

Once you’ve discovered Minki, you will want more of her designs. Look for her first three books too: Sew Illustrated, Diary in Stitches, and Zakka from the Heart.
