Diagnosis Quilting

Diagnosis Quilting

Posted by Jen Lopez on Mar 4th 2020

It’s finally March here in New England, which by our weather standards means absolutely nothing. The Groundhog cruelly predicted an early spring and we got a few days of weather in the 70’s (in February!) only to be reminded a few days later that it’s still most definitely winter. I’m sure I speak for many folks out there when I say, I definitely have a serious case of the Winter Blahs.

There is really only one known cure for me. For my Mom, it was a trip to the local greenhouse where she reportedly exclaimed “Ah…. Flowers ARE real!” For me, it’s a trip to the local quilt shop to see what new goodies await. Like my Mom’s flower shop, the local quilt shop is full of fresh, bright florals waiting to get picked.

Starting a new quilting project will definitely help you chase away those winter blahs. You can:

  • Get out of the house – Commuting both to and from work in the dark creates a seemingly endless sense of gruesome monotony. I’ll take any excuse to get out of the office or house.
  • Get inspired – New colors, new palettes, new designs are all waiting to inspire your next quilt. Fortunately for me, my favorite postal worker – who I see nearly daily as a result of my online business’s shipping needs – was kind enough to supply me with a great reason to quilt: a baby shower gift! I’m sure I could have made something with stuff I have in my stash, but of course I had to go check out what was new and in her color scheme that she’s already picked out.
  • Catch up – Thanks to bad weather and snow & ice closings, haven’t seen any of my quilting pals in months. Now is the time to get out and catch up, connect with actual people and find out what’s new with them. Social media is fine but nothing beats a face to face conversation.
  • Business is slow – Business is slow for local businesses after the holidays so you’d be doing them a favor by showing up, and your credit card has probably recovered from the holidays by now.
  • There are no days off – If you have kiddos in public school like I do, you know that there are ZERO days off in March. That means no specious “work-from-home” days for you, no legit vacation days for you… nothing but the same ol’ same ol’. You need a day off! Better hit the quilt shop.

I’m sure you don’t need a reason, but in case you do, I’ve just given you five. You’ll be feeling better in no time!
