Classic Art from Fabric Scraps

This project answers three of my nagging questions.

First, WHAT can I do with all these lovely scraps? They are too beautiful to just sit in the box.

Second, HOW can I bring the freedom of painting, a la Bob Ross to quilting appliqué? I mean, who doesn’t want a happy little tree?

Third, years ago, a friend told me how painters learned to paint. They go to the museum and copy a painting. That’s brilliant! Now HOW can I do that with fabric?

My first step was to pick an art image I loved, Sunflowers by Van Gogh. I made the best color print possible. Then I enlarged the print onto foundation paper for tracing.

Next I pulled all the scraps that matched the colors in the print and I fused them to make a palette.

Tracing and cutting, fusing layer by layer, I created the painting with my fabric.

I am teaching the entire process, step-by-step, with all my tricks, at Layered and Stitched: An Art Quilt Experience, Friday and Saturday, May 17-18, 2024Sign up today and use the code "ART24JK" to get $20 off the event at checkout. Learn from the masters, make you own masterpiece!
