Artful Improv Blog Tour Kickoff

I’m excited to kick off the blog tour for my new book, Artful Improv: Explore Color Recipes, Building Blocks & Free-Motion Quilting, today!
If you had told me two years ago that I would be writing this post today, I would have been very surprised—even though writing a book has been in the back of my mind for a long time.
I spent the last ten years or so traveling around the country showing and selling my art quilts at fine art and craft shows. That experience gave me the opportunity to talk to a lot of people about being an artist. And I realized that many people want to be creative but aren't sure where to start.
It's my hope that this book will help to unlock the creativity puzzle for those quilters just starting out, as well as those who have more experience but would like a "road map" to help them take the next step on their artistic journey.
Artful Improv isn't a pattern book, it's more of a technique book that gives you the tools you need to move beyond using patterns to create your own original designs.
For example, you'll learn about adding a small amount of a contrasting color to make your design pop, as in Summer Horizon, above, as well as using dynamic lines to create motion and texture in your work.
Interested in more complex designs? Learn how to create different elements, like improv blocks, curved strips, and striped insets, and then combine them into an original art quilt, like Time Travel, below.
