Learn to Paper Piece Like a Star!

Make A Paper-Pieced Star! (The shop may select any star from the book. You might want to select the star that represents your state or a National Park in your area. You may select a very simple star block such as the Delaware or Kansas block and offer this as a beginning paper piecing class.)

Class Description

Flexible skill levels depending upon the star selected (Blocks with more pieces take more time.)

Learn to cut and label your fabric pieces, assembly-line sew the foundations and to accurately join the foundations.

Your completed 12" star block will be ready to make into a project. The skills you learn in this class will permit you to make any of the blocks in 60 Fabulous Paper-Pieced Stars. You will love the accuracy you can achieve creating stunning star blocks.

Class Length One day class about 6 hours.

Class Supply List

  • 60 Fabulous Paper-Pieced Stars

  • Carol Doak Foundation Paper.-5 pages (1 extra in case) printed (can scan the image) or copied at 100% to create foundations for the selected star

  • Sewing machine in good working order equipped with a size 90/14 needle

  • Open-toe presser foot if you have one. If not, your standard foot will be Ok

  • Fabric: Bring a selection of fabrics including a few fat quarters

  • Thread to match your fabrics, and straight pins with flat heads

  • Rotary cutter, mat to accommodate a 9" area, and small scissors

  • 6" Add-A-Quarter Ruler

  • 6" x 12" rotary ruler

  • Small pad of stick on notes and pencil to mark cut fabric piece locations

  • Small pressing mat and small iron-(You may have pressing stations and eliminate the need for students to bring small iron and pressing mat.)

  • Small postcard or card stock approximately 4" x 6"

  • Scotch Brand Removable Magic tape to repair foundation should you have to remove a piece of fabric.

(Note to Shop Owner/Teacher: This list can be edited down by kitting all the fabric, providing communal ironing stations, providing a postcard or card stock and having Scotch Brand Removable Magic tape available for students to use if needed.

Classroom Preparation

Each student will need a sewing machine space, power, and an area next to their machine for a work area.

Class Agenda

  1. Have students audition their fabrics as to the placement on the foundation.

  2. Write their fabric colors on the foundations. Pages 8 and 9

  3. Using the cutting list for the selected star, instruct how to cut and label the fabrics for each foundation. Pages 10-12.

  4. Instruct how to cut the foundations apart leaving at least 1/2" outside solid line.

  5. Instruct how to set up the sewing machine and assembly-line sew the A foundations and then the B foundations. Pages 13-15

  6. Instruct how to trim the completed foundations. Page 15

  7. Instruct how to join the foundations Pages 17-19

Display the student's blocks as they are completed so the class can admire the different fabric selections.
